2. What is it and what is it good for ?
The PLC offers you:
-
Place to work on your assignments in groups - this has been
proven to be the most effective way to learn the material.
-
Help for homework problems or any other physics questions,
mainly from fellow students
-
Help from TA's and honor students (who are assigned to help
you during scheduled hours in the PLC) is also available for groups that are
stuck.
-
Computer terminals to enter your solutions into LON-CAPA
3. Hints and Rules for PLC use
-
When to go
?
You can go to the PLC whenever you like. Obviously it is a good idea to use
it during the hours scheduled for
PHY183.
- Who can I
get help from in the PLC
The PLC is first and foremost a cooperative learning environment. Please
form a study group with fellow students or join an existing group. The TA
can help you find a group and will help with physics questions if a group
gets stuck. The honors students will join groups and provide help, but we
encourage all students to help their classmates - this is often the best way
to learn the material.
- How to
work in groups
- Help other students understand the
material and how to solve the problems, but do not do the work for them.
- When you don't understand something
ask - you are responsible to make sure that you understand the material -
just getting the homework right is not necessarily enough to succeed in the
next exam.
- Respect your fellow students.
- Encourage every member to
participate.
- Create an atmosphere were different
ideas can be expressed and discussed
- Computer
use
- Please use the computers only
to enter your answers into LON-CAPA. Any other use is not appropriate.
- Login is limited to 15 min per
session. Make sure you hit the "Submit" button frequently ....
- Please obtain user ID and
password from the TA's.
- TA's and honors students are
discouraged to help individual students in front of the computers.
- No food
and no drinks in the PLC
