Before going to college I worked at my family's greenhouse business, Pinter Flowerland, Inc. in Belleville, MI, where I grew up. Working long hours basically my entire life caused me to develop a rather strong work ethic, which I have carried with me ever since.
My love of scientific research was cultivated at Hope College in Holland, MI where earned a B.S. in Chemistry and a B.A. in Physics. The four years I spent at Hope were ones I will never forget, and I am constantly wondering if I will ever find another place like it. I began research during my sophomore year, and liked it so much that I didn't stop until a month after I graduated, all semesters and summers included. My research began in the area of Analytical Chemistry, specifically electrochemistry, with Prof. Kenneth Brown. In short, I helped develop an electrochemical sensor for glucose, developed primarily on my own an electrochemical sensor for hydrazine, and then moved my research in a more nuclear chemistry direction, and worked with Prof. Graham Peaslee and Prof. Paul DeYoung. Using Hope's particle accelerator, I characterized the thin films which were an intricate part of both sensors. The films were characterized for properties such as thickness and composition using a technique called Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry (RBS).
When not working in lab, I have many hobbies that keep me well occupied. At the top of my list is spending time with my family. I love anything that involves being outside including hiking, camping, running, road biking, cruiser biking, swimming, golf, basketball, slalom waterskiing, wakeboarding, and kneeboarding. In 2008 I did a 5-day, 340 mile bike ride from Lansing, MI to Mackinac, MI. A group from the lab does this organized ride (known as DALMAC) every year! I also enjoy simply sitting outside in the middle of the forest, appreciating the beauty of nature. I used to play the piano, taking lessons from the time I was 5 years old, right up through my senior year at Hope, and gave a nice senior recital before graduating. Unfortunately, I have let it slip while in graduate school, but hope to rekindle my talent afterward. I love music, going to the symphony, and listening to all of my talented music friends play. I also enjoy writing letters and (trying to) keep in touch with my friends who have seemed to have moved all over the country, although I could be better at that.
On September 19, 2008 I married Eric Berryman. Eric works at NSCL as a cyclotron controls engineer and we met when I arrived as a graduate student in 2005. We dated for three years and the rest is history!
Here is my senior recital. These are .m4a files... but if you just click on the link they should play on your favorite media player. Let me know if you have problems! I may be able to get the little player at the bottom working later, but it's not there, yet...
So the links aren't working, yet. I'll have to work on it later. I think I need to convert them to mp3. Sorry!
