The microscopic basis of the Interacting Boson Approximation (IBA) for the description of low-lying collective states in (medium) heavy nuclei is reviewed. It will be emphasized that the IBA should be regarded as an e ective model where in particular the application to odd mass nuclei is discussed. Application to the calculation of single particle transfer and single- and double-beta decay will be mentioned.
