From Physics World: Giving students a taste of research

Physics undergraduate curricula should offer students the chance to take part in real research problems to inspire them to pursue the subject further, says Michael Thoennessen, NSCL associate director for education, in a commentary appearing in the February 2008 issue of Physics World. Thoennessen is involved in the MoNA project, a collaboration of several U.S. colleges and universities. The project's focus is detecting and studying fast neutrons from the decay of neutron-rich exotic nuclei produced in projectile-fragmentation reactions, which are a particular specialty of NSCL’s Coupled Cyclotron Facility..
