The Operations Department is responsible for the daily operation and general maintenance of the Coupled Cyclotrons at the NSCL. The cyclotrons are in operation 24 hours a day, 7 days a week barring scheduled shutdowns and breakdowns. At least one operations staff (Cyclotron Operator or just plain Operator) is on duty all the time. Currently we have 7 operators working a 6-week rotating shift schedule. I've been employed at the NSCL for more than six years as a cyclotron operator, the last six months as the operations group supervisor. My first job after graduating from college was installing and servicing Magnetic Resonance Imaging equipment. I flew around the country for nearly eight years working in this field and, boy, are my arms tired. My job responsibilities at the NSCL range from hands-on wrench twisting to controls software programming. I thoroughly enjoy my work at the NSCL and count myself lucky to be a part of a world-renowned physics program.
