Gelbke has had 234 papers published in the most distinguished refereed journals, including 54 in Physical Review Letters, plus 91 papers published at conferences. He has given 79 invited talks at U.S., European, and international conferences, including several on rare isotope research; he has given over 100 research seminars at other institutions, and has co-edited 4 books of conference proceedings. Gelbke was the most cited experimental nuclear nuclear physicist on the 1997 version of The World's 1,120 Most Cited Physicists, compiled by the Institute for Scientific Information and based on published work from 1981-June 1997.
