NSCL is committed to raising awareness about women and minorities in science, including the obstacles they face and their past and present accomplishments. As part of this commitment, the laboratory sponsors an occasional lecture series where issues related to underrepresented scientists can be discussed broadly and often in a historical context. NSCL has captured two of the three lectures to-date on video and made the content available on Google Video. As with all of our experiments with new media formats, our goal in publishing these videos is to share the discussion of important ideas with a wider audience.
Similarly, in an effort to reach out to prospective graduate students and put a human face on the next-generation of nuclear science, NSCL features several of its rising young faculty members on its YouTube channel. Among those currently featured are Abigail Bickley, assistant professor of nuclear chemistry, and Filomena Nunes, assistant professor of nuclear theory. Nunes, in particular, speaks about what it's like to be a woman entering the field.
"If you're a woman trying to come into physics, let me tell you, I understand your fear because it's not always that easy," Nunes says in her interview. "But fortunately, the whole culture in the U.S. is changing. There is an effort [of inclusion], and not only locally at MSU and in particular at NSCL, but also all through the various universities and national labs; [it's change that is] all driven by the funding agencies that are really pushing us in that direction."
