Big Bang Theory

At the last APS meeting, there was a lunch discussion about popularizing science, specifically physics. I have many theories for why physics isn't popular with the masses, and a few ideas for how this could be helped, but the media is definitely an outlet to consider. The last two years, I've watched a TV show called Big Bang Theory, and I wonder whether this show is helping or hurting the view of physics. First, I wonder how many non-physicists or rather non-geek types actually watch the show. If people not interested in science aren't watching the show, it's a moot point.
The show revolves around 3 physicists, an engineer (all male) and the pretty girl next door. The four guys embody different stereotypes about personality quirks seen in scientists. On a cognitive level, I realize that comedy is supposed to exaggerate the stereotypes, but on a personal level, I find it irritating that we aren't portrayed in a more positive light. If you don't have experience with people of a certain type, sitcoms may be your first exposure, and you may not realize how extreme the exaggerations are. I'm worried that the show is giving an inaccurate introduction of scientists to the masses. Also, the plots are somewhat lame and lacking in humor at times. If you're going to make a show about social outcasts, at least make it a good show every week.
