Abstract:  Superconducting RF (SRF) cavities are widely used in particle accelerators for different purposes - in nuclear science, in high energy physics, for free-electron lasers, industrial, medical and defense applications. For proton or ion beam acceleration in medium and high velocity range, multi-cell elliptical cavities are used. In the presentation, the physics background of the cavity operation is discussed; the principles of the cavity RF and mechanical design are considered; phenomena limiting the cavity performance are discussed. Current state-of-the art design and technology of SC elliptical cavities including extensive Fermilab experience will be presented.
